Despite Trump’s Adjustment of Export Policy Towards China, Some Moves Escaped Wide Discussion, TSMC
Amidst what appeared to be a strict policy, TSMC quietly secured a one-year license in China to continue its operations there.
This development comes against the backdrop of China’s decision to implement an export license requirement for numerous foreign companies, which needs annual renewal. While Hynix & Samsung have already obtained this license for their operations in China, it was only in the new year that TSMC informed Reuters it had also received a one-year license from the Chinese government.
This license is equivalent to permission for TSMC to continue supplying American equipment to its facility in Nanjing. According to TSMC representatives, this will enable the smooth sale and transfer of chips. It also relieves TSMC from the burden of obtaining mandatory licenses for chip suppliers to China.
Two years ago, TSMC’s Nanjing facility contributed 2.4% to the company’s total revenue.
