Panther Lake Closer Than We Think: x86 Chips with Incredible Energy Efficiency

At the CES 2026 exhibition, Intel’s Panther Lake processors, also known as the Core Ultra Series 3, were unveiled. Intel states that this product will be among the first consumer offerings for mobile and computing platforms to utilize its new Intel 18A (1.8 nm) technology, which was developed and produced in the United States. These processors make extensive use of RibbonFET transistors and backside power delivery, allowing Intel to achieve remarkably high energy efficiency and performance.

According to Intel’s announcements, these processors will be widely available and showcased in more than 200 different system models, from mobile to desktop computers. Intel has also developed an industrial-grade variant; the Series 3 chips have already been tested and certified for use in many embedded systems, industrial equipment, AI technologies, robotics, and similar fields. This is because these sectors highly value processors with increased heat resistance, which, according to Intel, these chips possess.

What they say?

Jim Johnson (Senior Vice President) states that these processors are designed for high performance, paired with a more powerful GPU, high neural processing performance, exceptional energy efficiency, and full x86 compatibility.

These processors will come in several configurations. It should be clarified that they will feature both performance and efficient cores. For example, one model in the series will have a 2 + 4 configuration (2 performance cores and 4 efficient cores). Next will be an 8-core model with a 4 + 4 scheme, followed by a top-tier 16-core processor with a configuration of 4P + 4LPE cores, plus 8 highly efficient “Darkmount” cores. There will also be differences in the number of supported PCIe lanes—some will support up to 20, while others up to 12.

Intel plans to open pre-orders for the processors in January, with general sales starting on the 27th of this month.
