Against the backdrop of the general price increase for all memory, including RAM and NAND
—sometimes seemingly artificially inflated, as we found out in a previous article—some people have decided to profit in a different way.
As reported by the publication DigiTimes, Samsung has discovered unjustified discounts being given on memory shipments by its local division.
According to the same publication, Samsung has launched an investigation into possible bribes involving personnel responsible for semiconductors and the sales department.
For this purpose, investigators were secretly dispatched to conduct an internal company probe.
The investigation, which mainly involved a number of Samsung employees and agents suspected in matters related to memory products,
even reached Singapore and China. Meanwhile, a Samsung representative stated that
these are routine operations and declined to comment on the situation.
And all of this is happening while the global
memory market shows no signs of dropping in price.
If, as we found out with graphics cards in a previous article,
it was just a short-term price hike due to hype,
here we are observing a rather prolonged crisis.
As many companies and sectors from various manufacturing and extraction industries state,
the crisis could easily extend until 2027. And this case with Samsung only shows that things will worsen,
as such situations may only become more frequent.
It is also worth remembering that while Samsung and SK Hynix at least continue to produce consumer RAM memory,
Micron is shutting down Crucial by early 2026. And the reason lies entirely in the extremely high margin of HBM memory for servers.
