It recently came to light that a vulnerability existed in the cybersecurity of one of the divisions of the Trust Wallet cryptocurrency wallet.
Specifically, the vulnerability was in the browser extension, which hackers exploited to steal funds from various users’ wallets, amounting to approximately $6.5 million.
As it became known, this information came from an insider, ZachXBT, who specializes in cryptocurrencies and is a private investigator.
He reported that some users had complained about missing funds from their wallets. According to him, the exact cause of this vulnerability is not yet fully known, but it coincided precisely with an update to the wallet’s browser extension.
To be more precise, this incident occurred in the security aspect of the extension when developers recommended switching to a newer version, from 2.68 to 2.69. The updated version (2.69) was the only one affected by this case.
The owner, Changpeng Zhao, stated that the developers will definitely compensate for the damage, and the cybersecurity vulnerabilities have already been patched. This comes in a year where cryptocurrency thefts have amounted to around $3.4 billion.
However, this amount, while still significant, is actually slightly lower than last year’s figure of approximately $3.3 billion. This minor decrease might indicate that, despite major incidents, security measures across the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem are gradually improving.
